Expert Sudoku
Play expert-level Sudoku free online, right here. These are tough 9×9 puzzles — one rung below evil — free, in your browser, with no signup. Solve one, then decide whether you’re ready to step up.
What is expert Sudoku?
Expert is the tier above hard and a notch below evil. It is still a standard 9×9 grid with the same rules — every row, column and 3×3 box holds 1 to 9 exactly once — but it gives up very few easy cells. To finish an expert board you reach for intermediate-to-advanced techniques, and often more than one working together before a single number drops into place.
A common myth is that fewer starting clues means a harder puzzle. It doesn’t. Difficulty comes from the hardest technique a puzzle requires, not its clue count.
Expert vs evil: when to step up
Expert puzzles are usually solvable with pairs, triples and the occasional X-Wing. Evil puzzles are a clear step beyond: they routinely need fish patterns and chains, often several together. If you’re clearing expert boards comfortably and want a real test, step up to evil Sudoku — the hardest tier we generate.

Expert Sudoku FAQ
What is expert Sudoku?
Expert Sudoku is the difficulty tier above hard — a serious challenge that sits one notch below evil. The rules are exactly the same as any Sudoku: fill every row, column and 3×3 box with the digits 1 to 9. What changes is the logic. An expert board gives up few easy cells and routinely needs intermediate-to-advanced techniques, sometimes more than one working together.
Is expert harder than hard Sudoku?
Yes. Expert puzzles offer fewer easy placements than hard ones and demand a deeper toolkit — pairs and triples, pointing pairs, and patterns like the X-Wing. The same solver who clears a hard board quickly will spend longer on an expert one. If expert feels too steep, drop back to hard and build your toolkit there.
What's the difference between expert and evil Sudoku?
Evil is a further step up. Where expert leans on pairs, triples and the occasional X-Wing, an evil board routinely requires deeper tools — fish patterns and forcing chains — and several of them in combination. Expert is the gateway; evil is the destination for solvers who have outgrown it.
What techniques do I need for expert Sudoku?
Expect to use naked and hidden pairs and triples, pointing pairs, and an intro-level X-Wing. We do not re-teach strategy here — each technique links out to sudoku247wiki.com, the network’s strategy reference, where it is explained step by step.
Is expert Sudoku free to play?
Yes. Expert Sudoku is completely free and plays instantly in your browser — no download, no account and no paywall. Every board has a single, unique solution. Open the board above and start solving.
